 “Poor at drying the air & very cumbersome to move” 2008-05-30

We have the WA-1220M model of this product (virtually identical). If you stand right in front on it, up to about 5 feet away, it’s nice. However, it has several drawbacks:

1. It isn’t very good at drying the air; evaporation is needed for effective air-conditioning (whether in your car or your home).

2. It must be drained of the water it does pull from the air, and draining the unit is very cumbersome. It comes with a small flexible plastic tube that has to be connected to the rear bottom of the unit; the other end must be lower in order to drain or the unit really does very little and although there’s an indicator light that will come on if the unit is quite full of water, it’s very rare that the light comes on (and it only does so LONG after the unit has stopped cooling the air). We have taken to wrapping a large towel around the far end of the tube to collect water that drains, but basically you must tilt the heavy unit backwards to try to drain it. This is not particularly effective but it must be done.

3. It has wheels, but it doesn’t roll easily (it’s hard to push or pull it in a straight line and the wheels are so small even getting over a low rug is difficult.

4. Moving the unit up or down a single step can be accomplished by one person but since the entire unit is made of very smooth, slippery plastic (it has handles but they’re very shallow & not helpful), it’s more safely accomplished with two people.

5. Consider that this unit, while mobile, sacrifices a good window seal. The large exhaust hose (which pumps the hot air outside) resembles a telescoping dryer hose that easily falls out of the backside of the unit and is awkward to extend evenly. The unit comes with a smallish piece of foam with a cutout hole for the hose. However, you are left with having to find some way to block the rest of whatever window you choose to put the hole into. We use a large carboard box panel and cut a hole out of, then duct-tape the box into the window opening to block out air seepage. As you can imagine, it looks pretty tacky.

We wouldn’t buy this again.

I use this AC to cool my bedroom that’s about 225 sq. ft. The manufacturer claims this unit is capable of cooling easily upto 250 sq. ft.

I’ve been using this AC for a week. The air it puts out is definately cool but this AC cannot cool the room more than 2-3 degrees, yes, farenheit. It cools the room by a couple degrees in the first hour, after that I can’t see any difference whether the AC is on or not.

Well, ok, to be fair, the difference is that it does make noise and consume gobs of power without cooling anything.

Piece of garbage.

(side note: the first one that got sent to me leaked water everywhere; I sent it back and received a working unit)

It’s as if someone designed this thing aiming specifically for annoyance and inconvenience.

The manual is full of contradictions and outright lies; the unit needs draining far more than they suggest and the process is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever tried to do.

The drainage spout is located about a half inch off the ground and the manual suggests that you not move the unit while it’s full (I don’t know exactly how much water it holds, but it takes a loooong time to drain).

This forces you to do one of two things; spend an hour filling up and emptying the tiny little tray they give you, or come up with some of your own creative and time saving drainage methods because you WILL have to drain this thing every 4-6 hours.

Plus, this unit is massive and a HUGE pain in the ass to move unless you can roll it to wherever you’re emptying it.

That being said, if you can rig up a way for it to drain continuously, it works like a charm.

I bought this product to condition the downstairs master bedroom at night so I did not have to cool the whole first floor. This product is quite loud. You can sleep through it, but it is more than just white noise. It is louder than a box fan on high. You will have to modify it to make it work well. The other reviews that mention foam board or some other insulator around the window vent are absolutely correct. It is also a good idea to wrap the air tube with insulation. The water reservoir fills very quickly in a room that already has conditioned air (filled in less than four hours in Houston). At that point I felt it just was not worth it.

Unit came with defective hairline crack in water reservoir. Ruined $400 area rug and wood floors underneath it on the first day of use. It was supposed to turn itself off when the water reservoir fills up, but did not. Extremely irritating draining process even if it wasn’t cracked. Wish I had chosen any of the other competing air conditioners found on amazon. Never buying a Soleus product ever again.

So I looked around locally before ordering such a heavy device online, but it was cheaper with free shipping so how couldn’t I buy it? I was a bit worried when it came, because the box was so big, but its mostly padding, the unit is very respectably sized, and while it has some weight to it, the wheels make it super easy to move around.

The unit is easy to understand, works great, I wish I had bought one a long time ago. I use it in the garage so I can have guests over during bbqs (I live in a townhouse-like setup, so have to bbq outside my garage), and it does a great job of keeping it cool. Being in Vegas, the real test will be this summer, but I have confidence it’ll make a noticeable difference.
